General

Is OnlineAudioEdit really free?

Yes, 100% free. There are no trials, no premium unlock tiers, no watermarks, and no file size limits. Every single feature — including AI Noise Reduction, all 11 voice effects, Studio Enhance, Lo-Fi mode, audio metadata editing, and WAV/MP3 export — is available to all users at no cost, with no signup required. We are committed to keeping the core editor free forever.

Do my audio files get uploaded to a server?

No. Your audio files never leave your device. All editing, effects processing, and even AI Noise Reduction run entirely inside your web browser using the Web Audio API and TensorFlow.js. We have no servers that receive, store, or process your audio recordings. Once the page loads, the editor works completely offline — your recordings remain 100% private and on your machine.

Which browsers are supported?

OnlineAudioEdit works in all modern browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, and Apple Safari — on desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile devices. For the best experience, we recommend using the latest version of Chrome or Edge. All core features including AI Noise Reduction work across all supported browsers.

Can I use this on my phone or tablet?

Yes. The interface is fully responsive and automatically adapts to smaller screens. On mobile devices, the sidebar controls slide out from the left and all buttons are touch-friendly. You can import audio, apply effects, and export files directly from your phone's browser — no app installation needed.

Importing & Formats

Which audio formats can I import?

OnlineAudioEdit supports importing MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, OGG, OPUS, FLAC, WEBM, and AIFF files. You can import files by clicking the Import button in the sidebar or by dragging and dropping directly onto the waveform area. The editor accepts essentially any audio format that your web browser can decode natively.

Why can I only export WAV and MP3?

Web browsers can decode many audio formats but can only encode a limited set. WAV export uses the browser's native audio processing and always works reliably across all platforms. MP3 export uses the lamejs library for real-time encoding. Other formats like M4A/AAC require encoding capabilities that most browsers do not expose. If you need a different format, we recommend exporting as WAV and using a free converter tool afterwards.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no strict file size limit imposed by OnlineAudioEdit. Since all processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device's available memory and processing power. Most modern devices can handle files up to 1-2 hours without issues. Extremely long recordings (3+ hours) may be slower to process on devices with limited RAM.

Editing

How do I select a part of the audio?

Click and drag your mouse (or finger on mobile) across the waveform to create a highlighted selection region. The selection boundaries are shown visually and the duration appears in the "Sel" indicator. Use the zoom slider to get closer to specific moments for precise selection. Click once anywhere on the waveform without dragging to move the playhead to that time position.

What is the difference between Trim, Cut, Delete, and Split?

Trim keeps only the selected region and removes everything outside it — ideal for extracting a highlight, creating a ringtone, or isolating a specific moment. Cut removes the selected region and seamlessly joins the remaining audio — perfect for removing mistakes, "ums," or awkward pauses. Delete works the same as Cut but is intended for removing unwanted noise segments. Split divides your audio into two separate clips at the selection boundaries, allowing you to work with each part independently.

Do speed changes and effects apply to the exported file?

Yes. Any speed adjustment (from 0.5× to 2.0×), voice effect, volume change, or quality enhancement you apply will be "baked" into the exported audio file. What you hear during playback is exactly what will be in your downloaded file. If you want to export the original unmodified audio, click Reset before exporting to revert all changes.

Effects & Quality

What does Studio Enhance do?

Studio Enhance applies three professional audio treatments in one click: dynamics compression to even out volume differences (loud parts become softer, quiet parts become louder), a high-frequency "air" boost that adds brightness and clarity to voices, and normalization that brings the overall volume to a broadcast-standard level. It is especially useful for podcasts, voiceovers, and dialog recordings that sound inconsistent or too quiet.

What is Lo-Fi mode?

Lo-Fi mode applies creative bitcrushing (reducing the audio to 4-bit resolution) and a low-pass filter to give your audio a crunchy, retro, vinyl-like character. It is a popular creative effect used for making lo-fi music clips, nostalgic voice messages, or adding vintage character to any sound. The effect is non-destructive — click Reset at any time to go back to the original.

How does AI Noise Reduction work?

Our AI Noise Reduction uses TensorFlow.js running directly in your browser to perform intelligent spectral gating. It learns a "noise profile" from either the first half-second of your recording (auto-detect mode) or from a region you manually select on the waveform. Then it applies frequency-aware suppression to remove that specific noise pattern — such as air conditioner hum, microphone hiss, fan buzz, or electrical ground loop — while carefully preserving speech, music, and the sounds you want to keep. You control the reduction strength from 0–100%.

Exporting & Metadata

Should I export as WAV or MP3?

It depends on your use case. WAV is a lossless format that preserves every detail of your audio — choose it when quality is your top priority, such as for professional production or further editing. MP3 creates much smaller files (often 5-10× smaller) that are ideal for sharing on social media, uploading to podcast hosts, emailing, or storing on devices with limited space. If you are not sure, the "Match import" option will try to export in the same format as your original file.

Can I edit audio metadata like title, artist, and album art?

Yes. Click the "View Audio Metadata" button after importing a file to open the metadata editor. You can edit the title, artist, album, year, and genre fields, and even upload custom album art that gets embedded directly into the exported MP3 file. This is perfect for organizing your music library, labeling podcast episodes, or adding professional branding to exported audio files.

What happens if I export with a selection active?

If you have a region selected on the waveform, the export will only include the selected portion of the audio — not the entire clip. This is useful for quickly exporting a specific highlight or clip without needing to trim first. If no selection is active, the full audio clip is exported with all effects and adjustments applied.
